Frequently Asked Questions about LASIK
No. The surgery is virtually painless. A small percentage of patients may
experience a gritty sensation similar to dry or dirty contacts, which
usually resolves in one to two days after surgery.
LASIK is based on procedures performed with highly effective results
for over 30 years. No one has ever gone blind from laser surgery. Risk of
serious complications is less than one percent.
Most patients with moderate or mild prescriptions will achieve within a line
or two of 20/20. The visual outcomes are based on the degree of correction
necessary.
While patients with higher prescriptions may take longer to obtain clear
vision, most LASIK patients see pretty well the next day, often 20/20 to 20/40.
Most can return to the work force in two to three days. Full, unrestricted
activity can be resumed in usually five to seven days.
LASIK is performed using a flap that is made in the cornea. PRK is performed
when one doesn't qualify for LASIK, usually due to the thickness of the cornea.
There is no flap with PRK, but both use laser to correct the prescription. The
healing time with PRK is slower, usually 1-2 weeks, but the outcomes are very similar.
